The invention of the mini screen has just about taken over the world of technology. From smart phones to tablets, having something hand held and at the ready for you to browse the internet, read and reply to emails, or even watch movies and read books has become more and more commonplace in our society. With these screens has come more concern for the damage that they are doing not only to the eyesight and the minds of those using them for hours on end, but also to the overall health of the individual.
Using screens just mere hours before you're attempting to sleep has been proven to be a leading cause of the disruption in circadian rhythms and sleep patterns, which in turn means a lowered amount of strength in the immune system and a higher risk for illness. Now, scientists are finding even more serious issues associated with staring at a brightly lit LED screen before bed.
Not only does reading on your ipad or playing one last game of Candy Crush before bed make it harder to fall asleep, but it also impacts how energized and alert you are the next day.
Light from screens in the evening alters alertness, and suppresses melatonin levels; due to this, there is a direct correlation between reading with a well lit, eliminated light-emitting device and energy levels the following day, especially when compared to reading an actual printed book.
Printed books do the exact same job, but do not affect the eyes or brain nearly as much as bright lights do, which is the main reason for a restless nights sleep when it comes to reading from a tablet or computer. Poor quality of sleep is a leading factor tied in to health problems like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
In studies, iPad users take much longer to fall asleep, and also feel less sleepy at night which leads to shorter REM sleep. These findings, when compared to those found in book readers, indicate how iPad readers tend to secrete less melatonin, which has the sole purpose of regulating sleep in the first place.
If ipads, tablets, and computer screens are must before bed, there are ways that you can reduce the amount of harsh light that your eyes and brain are seeing before you try to fall asleep. There are certain filters that have the ability to block blue light , or simply dim the screen as much as possible to allow for less train on the eyes.
